As you age, your skin begins to lose volume and elasticity due to the compromised production of collagen and elastin. This usually manifests as fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles. One treatment that can help to boost collagen synthesis and support a more youthful appearance is Profhilo.
Profhilo is a procedure that uses precise intradermal injections of hyaluronic acid (HA), known for its hydrating properties, to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. The slow release of HA stimulates collagen and elastic production in the deepest layers of the skin, resulting in deep tissue regeneration.
At Shens Medical, Profhilo injections are administered only by our experienced and accredited Medical Doctors, each with over 20+ years of experience. Our clinic in Singapore upholds high standards for safety and effectiveness across all the treatments we provide, while ensuring that treatments are tailored to meet individual patients’ needs and suitability. Profhilo is a minimally invasive aesthetic treatment that uses pure hyaluronic acid (HA) to boost skin hydration and collagen production.
The intradermal injections are administered using the Bio Aesthetic Points (BAP) technique, which optimises the distribution of HA across the face with only five injection points on each side.
This minimally invasive approach facilitates a gradual release that enhances fibroblast activity—a type of cell that contributes to connective tissue formation—thereby boosting the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
In a 2016 study, HA injections were observed to result in significant and observable changes in facial appearance, including tightening and plumping effects, wrinkle reduction, and moisture retention. These effects can help some individuals achieve anti-ageing effects while improving skin hydration and overall skin laxity, without the downtime associated with more invasive procedures.
Here at Shens Medical, every Profhilo treatment process begins with a thorough consultation with a doctor from our team. This consultation session will involve the doctor briefing the patient on the procedure, setting expectations about treatment process and outcomes, and answering any questions the patient may have. There will also be an initial assessment of the patient’s skin condition and finally the doctor’s recommendation on the patient’s suitability for treatment.
In preparation for the procedure, the doctor may recommend certain things the patient should or should not do beforehand. This includes staying away from medication that can thin the blood, such as aspirin and vitamin E supplements, unless absolutely medically necessary. These recommendations are intended to ensure the treatment proceeds as smoothly as possible, and minimise the risk of unwanted side effects.
Profhilo injections work by stimulating collagen into the skin rather than directly filling in sunken areas. During your treatment appointment, a doctor or technician will first apply numbing or anaesthetic cream to your skin to minimise discomfort.
The injections are administered using the Bio Aesthetic Points (BAP) technique, with five injection points marked on each side of the face. These areas offer maximum absorption and are positioned away from any big blood vessels to minimise safety risks. A 2020 study of Profhilo adverse event reports across three years concluded that the treatment generally had low adverse event reports, suggesting a high tolerablity in the treatment’s safety profile. Additionally, Shens Clinic follows a strict adherence to hygiene standards in all of our treatments in order to further minimise safety risks for patients.
Each procedure takes around 10 to 15 minutes, with around four weeks (or one month) between treatments if recommended by your doctor. This allows the doctor to make any adjustments based on an observation of the initial treatment outcomes. However, the full results will only be visible over several months and will vary across individuals. Maintenance appointments can be scheduled six to nine months after the initial treatment, and it’s best to consult with your doctor about this.
Unlike more invasive facial aesthetic procedures, Profhilo has minimal downtime with patients typically able to resume regular tasks, duties, and responsibilities immediately.
However, patients are recommended to avoid makeup and heavily scented products for a few days to allow the treatment areas to heal properly. Patients are also advised to stay away from excessive heat, such as saunas and hot baths, and to avoid strenuous exercise immediately after the procedure to prevent sweating and irritation. Patients should also avoid touching their face, which could result in irritation of the injection site.
The consulting doctor will be able to provide patients with specific recommendations for post-treatment care as well.
Profhilo is suitable for individuals in their mid-twenties or above showing early visible signs of ageing, such as fine lines and slight skin laxity. It can be effective for various skin types and may be particularly beneficial for those seeking a gentle solution to enhance their skin quality without invasive surgery.
Profhilo differs from other skincare procedures through its focus on skin hydration and bio-remodelling through hyaluronic acid (HA) injections. Unlike other injectables or fillers, it does not just fill in wrinkles on the epidermis but uses transdermal injections to stimulate collagen production and improve the skin’s overall structure.
Profhilo injections typically involve minimal discomfort, thanks to the localised use of anaesthetic cream and the strategic placement of injections using the BAP technique. If patients experience any unexpected pain after the procedure, they are recommended to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
Before undergoing Profhilo, it’s important to discuss your medical history and any skin conditions with your Doctor to ensure optimal safety and results. A certified Doctor will be able to recommend your suitability of Profhilo based on this discussion, as well as provide you with a list of precautions to avoid leading up to the procedure.
Visible improvements from Profhilo can often be seen soon after the first session, with further enhancements following subsequent treatments. This will vary across individuals.
Profhilo may be combined with other aesthetic treatments, but this is based on individual patient suitability and medical or aesthetic goals. If you wish to undertake Profhilo with other treatments like HIFU face lifts or laser acne scar removal, please discuss it with a trusted medical practitioner in Singapore to understand the potential risks and suitability considerations.
